The Nikkor Z 24-70mm F4 is Nikon’s first zoom for its mirrorless Z 7 and Z 6 full-frame models. Given the marketing spiel about it being high-end, it is really just a consumer-grade lens, and one that seems more geared towards filmmakers than photographers. That said, it’s quite a capable performer, and we put it to work on the Nikon Z 7 in London’s Canary Wharf – take a look and please leave a comment.

All images are edited to taste in Capture One Pro 12. Please click on the thumbnails for an enlarged view. Adjustments are limited to white balance, exposure parameters, and sharpening. Note the barrel and pincushion distortion and some lateral chromatic aberration in some of the images. This is a direct result of Capture One not using the built-in distortion correction profile. In other words, Phase One have tried to reverse engineer the corrections, which would be encrypted anyway.

Adobe won’t likely to be privy to the data either, and they’ve most likely applied their own corrections. The results look very different in ACR or when using Lightroom to Capture One Pro, with the latter allowing you to make your own.

Update; from version 12.1 Capture One Pro now applies the corrections automatically as a ‘Manufacturer Profile’ – is the result of Nikon sharing the data or has Phase One simply spent more time on reverse-engineering? I suspect the latter.

Use the slider in our interactive comparison tool (below) to see the effect of the built-in corrections perpetuated in Lightroom/ACR with that of Capture One Pro without any. Notice the barrel distortion in the outer field, particularly in the corners of the frame and the wider angle of view of the uncorrected image from Capture One Pro. Please try disregard some slight differences in the parameter settings between the two apps when processing out (to JPEGs).
