Zeiss reveals new Otus ML 1,4/35 in RF, E and Z mounts

Zeiss has announced the latest addition to the made-for-mirrorless, manual-focus Otus ML range: the Otus ML 1,4/35. This is the first Otus model in the popular 35mm focal length, having been omitted in favour of 1,4/28 in the original series. That said, Zeiss updated the optical design of the manual-focus Classic 1,4/35 model with the Milvus 1,4/35, both of which were probably the best 35mm F1.4 lenses for DSLRs at the time of their introduction.

Time doesn’t stand still, of course, and there have been several notable additions over the intervening years, such as the Sigma Art DG 35mm F1.4 HSM, Canon EF 35mm F1.4L USM II and more recently the Canon RF 35mm F1.4L VCM, all offering AF, which makes the choice difficult to compare directly. Many view AF as an advantage, particularly the press.

Nevertheless, this new Otus model is an Apo-Distagon type, which promises very high image quality. It features 15 elements in 11 groups, including two aspherical and seven anomalous partial dispersion glass elements. It also has a long throw for an MF lens with a 240-degree angle of rotation, which is similar to the maker’s cine lenses.

The new lens will cost £2,350 inc. VAT, and will be available in April.

Ironically, an updated version of the AF Sigma DG 35mm F1.4 II Art has been announced on the same day (in the lead up to the prestigious CP+ 2026 show in Japan). Featuring newly developed glass types, this also promises outstanding optical quality but, for the time being, only in Sony E and Leica L mounts. More surprising perhaps is the low price at just £849 inc VAT. The Zeiss and Sigma require a direct comparison test, but the difference in pricing is a clear disadvantage.
