CFexpress Type B cards: Which to choose for the Canon EOS R5 and Nikon Z8?

    September 23, 2023 /

Update August 2025: Since this post was published, most brands now offer CFexpress gen 4.0 cards, replacing many of those listed below in performance terms. Minimum sustained write speeds have improved greatly, making many more lower-priced cards suitable for high-grade 4/8K in-camera capture. Nevertheless, due diligence is still required with these cards. That said, one further benefit of the new type 4.0 standard is a sizeable reduction in the price of the high-end high-speed gen 2.0/3.0 cards listed below. DXOMark compares Dynamic Range between Nikon Z7 II, Sony A7R IV and Canon EOS R5

    April 20, 2021 /

DXOMark has just published the results for the Nikon Z7 II and compared them with the Canon EOS R5 and the Sony A7R IV, which are all fine cameras with excellent image quality. Most readers will be interested in the dynamic range, as it has a more meaningful effect on image quality at all ISOs than noise levels, especially low ISOs. However, as DR is reported at the measured ISO by DXOMark it can be difficult to decipher from the graphs what it is at the manufacturer settings – they are after all what you set on the camera. That said, using the measured ISO to present the sensor data…

    Canon EOS R5 Specifications

    July 9, 2020 /

The Canon EOS R5 takes over as the flagship in the mirrorless EOS R lineup, but the specification is curiously biased towards video rather than stills. Canon EOS R5 and six further lenses to be announced soon

    July 7, 2020 /

Canon is expected to formally reveal the full-frame Canon EOS R5 this Thursday, along with a previously announced lens (RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM) and two teleconverters (RF 1.4x, RF 2x) during a live-streamed event, starting at 2pm CEST. According to Canon Japan, there are a further six RF lenses that are expected to be announced ‘under-development’, with the aim of having them introduced by the year-end. Some of the camera’s specifications have been revealed already, including full sensor-width 8K RAW at 29.97 fps and 4K up to 119.88 fps in either 4:2:2 10-bit Canon log or 4:2:2 in 10-bit HDR PQ. Despite announcing some of the video features,…
