Sigma 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens review: Outstanding performer

September 29, 2018 / Comments Off on Sigma 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens review: Outstanding performer

The Sigma 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art debuted earlier in the year, around May, and is priced at around $1400/£1500. From the DG designation, you can tell that it’s a full-frame lens, and it’s available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma mounts. It is of course, targeting the superb but pricey Nikon AF-S Nikkor 105mm F1.4E ED, but would also appeal to Canon users, where a high-speed L-series model in that focal length is strangely absent from the line-up. It may also be possible that it becomes available in the Sony FE mount; it is already suitable for mirrorless cameras. Sigma has recently introduced some Art series in Sony FE mount,…

Fujifilm GFX 100 medium format camera with IBIS announced

September 26, 2018 / Comments Off on Fujifilm GFX 100 medium format camera with IBIS announced

In addition to announcing the new rangefinder-style Fujifilm GFX 50R and three new lenses, see here for more details, Fuji took the opportunity to make a development announcement. The 102MP GFX 100 medium format camera is a more conventionally styled model than the current GFX 50S and will include on-sensor PDAF across the entire frame. Information is sparse but the 102 megapixel sensor in the GFX 100 is expected to be 43.8 x 32.2mm sensor, like that found in the 50S and 50R models.  The GFX 100 also features sensor-based image stabilization – a first in medium format, and 4K video from the X Processor 4 engine. A mock-up was shown…

Fujifilm announces rangefinder-esque GFX 50R and three lenses

    September 26, 2018 / 2 Comments

Fujifilm has announced the GFX 50R, a rangefinder-styled medium format model based on the earlier GFX 50S. It adopts the same 51.4-MP cropped medium format sensor (43.8 x 32.2mm) as its sibling and much of the rest of the internals, albeit in a smaller, more compact body and with a significantly lower ticket. The GFX 50R adds Bluetooth connectivity with a smartphone and offers a similar build and weatherproofing as the 50S.  The built-in OLED viewfinder is a smaller 3.69M-dot unit but offers a reasonably generous 0.77x magnification. At the rear, the 3.2-in 2360K-dot touchscreen LCD uses a conventional tilting mechanism. The 50R has dual SD card slots with support…

Updated: Capture One adds RAW support for Fujifilm GFX 50S

    September 25, 2018 / 1 Comment

Phase One A/S, the developers of Capture One RAW software, have today announced Capture One Express for Fujifilm. This pared-down Express version of Capture One provides support of RAW files from an extensive range of Fujifilm T- and GFX-series cameras, including the medium format Fujifilm GFX 50S and the recently announced GFX 50R. A similar version exists for Capture One Express for Sony, which supports RAW files from Sony cameras. The company has also announced an upgrade to the fully-featured version of Capture One Pro to version 11.3, which besides adding support for the new Phase One IQ4 150 digital back also includes the same expanded support for Fujifilm RAW…

    Samsung announces mid-range Galaxy A7 with triple-camera

    September 22, 2018 / Comments Off on Samsung announces mid-range Galaxy A7 with triple-camera

Samsung has announced the Galaxy A7, a mid-range smartphone that features a rear-facing triple-camera. The new Galaxy A7 comes several months after rival Huawei launched the P20 Pro a high-end device using a triple camera in conjunction with Leica, the renowned lens and camera manufacturer. The new Galaxy A7 features a 24MP sensor and F1.7 primary camera module (with an unspecified focal length but likely a wide-angle, equivalent to 28mm) as well as an 8MP sensor with F2.4 super-wide-angle with a 120-degree field of view (equivalent to a 12.5mm). Surprisingly, unlike the Huawei P20 Pro, the third camera is not equipped with a short telephoto lens. Instead the Samsung Galaxy…

Sony announces Full Frame 24mm F1.4 G Master Prime for E-mount

September 20, 2018 / Comments Off on Sony announces Full Frame 24mm F1.4 G Master Prime for E-mount

Sony has announced a new ultra-high speed lens for its mirrorless APS-C and full-frame camera systems, the FE 24mm F1.4 G Master Prime. It has a relatively complex design of 13 elements in 10 groups, with three of those being ED glass to reduce CA and focuses to (a fairly typical) 0.24m (0.79 ft). Sony claim the adoption of two XA (extreme aspherical) elements effectively suppresses sagittal flare, more commonly known as coma. Thus, with its wide angular field of view and ultra-high speed  F1.4 maximum aperture, should appeal to photographers hoping to capture the night sky without the tell-tale aberration that results in smeared stars (point light sources), usually more…

Updated: Profoto adds new portable B10 light to range and promises smart connectivity

September 14, 2018 / Comments Off on Updated: Profoto adds new portable B10 light to range and promises smart connectivity

After the teaser last week hinting at a new addition to the range, high-end lighting manufacturer Profoto has announced the ultra-portable, cordless B10. Powered by a lightweight yet powerful rechargeable Li-ion battery that provides up to 400 full power flashes and up to 75 minutes of full continuous light for shooting video, the 250Ws B10 is said to have the equivalent power of five speedlights. Besides offering flash and continuous light with adjustable color temperature, the new B10 offers a large rear screen with a highly legible interface and fewer controls. The B10 is compatible with the company’s Air TTL remotes or from the built-in remote in the A1 flash and…

    September 12, 2018 / 2 Comments

Already the ‘go-to solution’ for high-end imaging pros, Capture One Pro is becoming increasingly popular with a much wider audience. Part of this could be the bundling with Sony and Fujifilm mirrorless cameras or that, arguably, Capture One has better color and sharpness over Lightroom using the defaults.
