Aperture values for reference
Maximum aperture values in third and half stops can be tricky to compare, so I’ve made a table to aid the task. Below F1.0 it gets a bit trickier still, so don’t take it as gospel (and it’s subject to amendment), but you’re unlikely to come across that many in regular production. The Noct Nikkor and Noctilux are both F0.95, which as you’ll see is 1/3 stop ‘faster’ than F1.0 and 1 1/3 stop faster than F1.4 and just over 1/2 stop faster than F1.2. Nikon Nikkor Z 85mm F1.8 S
Nikon has announced the Nikkor Z 85mm F1.8 S, a short fixed focal length prime lens for its full-frame mirrorless Z system. Nikon claims that the new fast portrait lens stands out for its “edge-to-edge sharpness” and “natural-looking bokeh”. Focus breathing “is all but eliminated,” Nikon add. Compared to the existing AF-S Nikkor 85mm F1.8G the new lens has the same minimum focus, and filter thread size, and weighs 70g more. The new lens is also 19mm longer, though it’s smaller in diameter by 2mm. Nikon currently advertises the AF-S lens with a list of £499. The new lens will go on sale in September 2019 at a list price…

Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM
Almost certainly this new lens is the successor to the EF100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM. If you don’t believe that, ask yourself if it makes sense for Canon to make that lens after introducing this. And remember this is an L-series lens, and if the new RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM is anything to go by this should be an excellent performer. Jumping ahead of both Sony and Nikon mirrorless options (Sony’s is 100-400mm and the Nikon is still missing), this is a highly versatile lens, and a smart move by Canon, before introducing any of the super-teles in RF mount.
