Lens cross-section
*Most tech data I’ve seen mentions 1x UD plus 1x Asph, but according to this Canon-produced graphic, the lens features 2x large-diameter UD elements, with one of those featuring a ‘ground’ aspherical surface, not a (GMo) moulded type, which is cheaper to produce. The fact that it’s both a UD element and a ground aspherical, which are typically hand-ground (actually, more like polished using a diamond paste) by highly-skilled ‘Meister’ lens workers, goes some way to explaining the confusion in messaging when launched; it should have been referred to as a “ground aspherical UD element.” This explains the high price and the outstanding image quality.
Curiously, the DS version has two separate coatings (one on each of two different lens surfaces), rather than just on a single element. The DS coating(s) reduce transmittance by “about 1.3 stops,” according to Canon, making the lens around T1.7-1.8, or T1.73 if you split the difference.
