NEC MultiSync PA271Q monitor review
Update December 2022: NEC has pulled out of the pro-photo market completely. I now recommend the rival the Eizo ColorEdge CS (or CG with built-in colorimeter) range. NEC MultiSync PA271Q monitor review – Introduction With outstanding image quality, the 2560 x 1440 27-inch NEC PA272W is one of my favourite displays. So I was a little discouraged to hear that it was discontinued in all its guises; MultiSync, SpectraView and SpectraView Reference. My disappointment didn’t last long, however, as NEC has announced a single replacement for all three versions, the MultiSync PA271Q. Typically, there isn’t much between updates though; a new connection standard and perhaps one or two new colour modes for out-of-the-box colour control…

Sigma UK announces pricing and availability of 40mm F1.4 Art
Sigma UK has announced that the price of the highly anticipated Sigma 40mm F1.4 DG HSM Art is to be £1099.99 inc VAT. The retail price is significantly higher than either the 35mm or 50mm F1.4 models but the new lens features a much more complex optical construction than either. As well as appealing to stills photographers for its indeterminate field of view, it is also expected to be a highly attractive option for filmmakers for the same reason. A spokesman for the company said the new lens will be available this month (November) in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts. When launched at Photokina, the lens was slated for October.…

Samsung anounces high resolution sensors for smartphone cameras
Samsung Electronics has launched two new high-resolution image sensors that are destined for multi-camera arrays in smartphones. The two “Isocell” sensors – a 48-megapixel and a 32-megapixel unit both feature small size 0.8 micron pixels and are crucially compact to fit the slim bodies demanded of smartphone makers. Called GM1 and GD1 respectively, the two new sensors feature Samsung’s Isocell Plus technology which adopts an innovative pixel structure that improves both light sensitivity and color fidelity, and what Samsung are calling Tetracell technology where the output from four pixels is combined into one (oversampled) for reduced noise. The sensors also support the gyro-based electronic image stabilization (EIS) technology used in…

Adobe announces update to version 8.0 of Lightroom Classic CC
At Adobe MAX 2018 in Los Angeles Adobe previewed Lightroom Classic CC version 8.0. Not to be confused with the recently introduced the cloud- and desktop- based Lightroom CC (now at version 2.0), Lightroom Classic CC is the familiar desktop-only version of the app, and is still the go-to option for enthusiasts and imaging professionals. New to this release is a highly practical and time saving HDR Panorama merge feature, that combines what was previously a two-stage process into one. This option allows both bracketed and overlapping frames with the maximal dynamic range to be stitched together to form wide or ultra-wide perspectives. It’s also available in the lastest update to Adobe…

Leica announces special edition Leica Q Khaki
Leica has announced a special edition of the Leica Q, the Leica Q Khaki. Clad in khaki leather trim and with chrome top and bottom plates the Leica Q Khaki is reminiscent of the Leica M Safari versions. In all other respects, the new khaki model is the same as regular Leica Q. The Leica Q remains one of the most compelling compacts currently available, however, the announcement of another limited edition will fuel the debate about when to expect a new model. It is believed that a version 2 or upgraded model when it comes will feature a new higher resolution sensor, 4K video and 120 fps for slow…

Capture One Pro Fujifilm Available As Perpetual License
Phase One announced at Photokina this year that Capture One Pro 11.3 was available with extended RAW support for Fujifilm cameras, most notably that they supported the medium format GFX 50S (and new GFX 50R, unofficially). Phase One also introduced a less feature rich Express version Capture One Express Fujifilm specifically for Fujifilm users, which is offered as a similar arrangement to the Capture One Express Sony. Capture One Express lacks some of the features of the Pro version such as Sessions, Layers and tethered camera control, but RAW file support for the cameras and lens profiles doesn’t vary. See here for the full list of features. A Pro version…

LG announces Five Camera LG V40 THINQ
Korea based LG Electronics has today unveiled the LG V40 THINQ, a premium smartphone with five cameras, though it’s not quite what it seems in that the rear camera setup has only three separate camera modules. The other two are used for selfies on the front. The high-end model has three rear camera modules to simulate a single zoom and features a 16MP sensor with super-wide field (107 degree) F1.9 lens, and a second with a large 12MP sensor with 1.4 micron pixels and standard lens (78 degree) with a F1.5 aperture. The third module includes a telephoto lens (45 degree) with F2.4 aperture and similar 12MP sensor, albeit with…
