Canon UK store sale with 10% off RF lenses

    July 4, 2025 /

The Canon UK store currently has a sale on RF lenses, with 10% off most, if not all, current RF models, including the vaunted L-series. For example, the extraordinary Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM lens was £3,160 inc VAT but is now £2,884 inc VAT (£316 off). When buying directly, Canon offers a 2-year guarantee and free shipping (when spending above £30). Furthermore, their generous returns policy gives you a 30-day window in which to send your item back (should you need to) free of charge for a full refund. Make your purchase as normal through the Canon Store to save. Offer ends 30/07/2025. Buy now while stocks last.…

Filter sizes for Canon RF lenses

    March 18, 2025 /

Manufacturers have favourite filter sizes. Canon, for example, often adopted 72mm and 77mm for L-series EF mount lenses but that has changed somewhat with the RF mount to 67mm, 77mm and 82mm being common sizes. Once a popular size on the original Canon FD breach-lock mount lenses from the 70s (not FDn), the 55mm filter thread size is also making a comeback. For Canon lenses, I recommend Canon ‘Protect’ or Protector filters as they’re extremely high quality. They’re also very reasonably priced, at least for the popular sizes. Sizes above 82mm are steep, though, so you could look for more competitive offerings such as the excellent Firecrest models for that…

    Fujifilm Fujinon GF30mm F5.6 T/S three-shot hand-held panorama at maximum shift (± 15mm)

    June 20, 2024 /

Handheld three-shot pano with GF30mm F5.6 T/S, totalling 175 MP. As this was shot without a tripod, there’s quite a bit of overlap in the centre, but what’s of interest here is that maximum shift ±15mm has been applied to show the worst case. Focus was confirmed using magnified LV, which is my preferred option of the various focusing aids. This three-shot pano was stitched in Lightroom Classic with an automatic (built-in) lens profile applied, which can’t be turned off. Still, no further ‘manual’ corrections were made to display the vignetting, and it’s no big deal, as it could be cleaned up. Automatic profiles like this don’t show what’s…

    Fujifilm Fujinon GF30mm F5.6 T/S specs compared with Canon EF 24mm F3.5L TS-E

    June 15, 2024 /

I realise this isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison but as many architecture photographers adapt the Canon 24mm TS-E to use on their Fujifilm GFX system cameras then the side-by-side contrast makes more sense. It’s surprising how similar the specs are but early testing of the Fujifilm GF30mm T/S with the 100MP Fujifilm GFX100 II (which has an optimised sensor for this lens, apparently) suggests super-impressive optical performance, even when shifted to the maximum. Also, if there was any doubt that the tilt and shift functions can be oriented separately to use in the same ‘direction’ (it wasn’t that clear in the press release), then I can confirm they can. When fully…

Canon RF 35mm F1.4 L VCM specs compared with predecessor, Canon EF 35mm F1.4L USM II

    June 6, 2024 /

Canon has introduced the mirrorless successor to the much-vaunted EF 35mm F1.4L USM II, only it’s not quite what we were expecting. Like the recently announced Canon RF 24-105mm F2.8L, this new lens is a hybrid model, appealing to filmmakers and still photographers. As such, it features a new voice-coil motor (VCM) for AF, a type of linear motor noted for its smooth focusing, supplemented with a second Nano USM to control the ‘floating’ (independently moved) element used in close-range correction. It also relies quite heavily on digital correction, though it’s not alone these days. A new step-less manual aperture ring is included, but only for video; apparently, it’s not…

    Canon adds heavy-hitting RF 800mm F5.6 and 1200mm F8 super-telephoto lenses to range

    February 25, 2022 /

Canon has added the RF 800mm F5.6 and RF 1200mm F8 to their mirrorless EOS R series cameras using the RF mount. This is presumably due to Canon experiencing a little pressure from Sony, as they’ve recently started targeting sports and action photographers with high speed telephotos to go with the Sony A9 and A1 cameras. Even Nikon have announced an interesting alternative with their PF 800mm F6.3, which appears to be targeting birders but no doubt, due to the smaller sizer and lower weight, but will also appeal to sports photographers. It’s a prudent move from Canon, however these two new lenses aren’t quite what they appear to be.…

Canon EOS R3 to be launched soon

    September 12, 2021 /

The Canon EOS R3 will be with us shortly and it marks a significant change in Canon’s line up – serial leaker Nokishita has stated that the resolution is 24MP. Given Nokishita Camera is likely a retailer in Japan, and/or has access (perhaps as a reseller) to one of the big online stores, the native resolution can no longer be contested. Evidently, Canon is feeling the pressure from Sony as this is destined to give the Sony a9 and a9 II a run for the money (or perhaps not at $5,999, at least initially anyway). As a sports-oriented camera, the EOS R3 likely won’t disappoint but what does that say…

Is the Canon EOS R3 sensor really 24MP? Continued

    August 25, 2021 /

Amazon-owned site DPReview state in an “exclusive” that the sensor resolution has been “confirmed” as 24MP. I while I agree it could very likely be 24MP (I thought it would be 30MP personally), the writer of the news article is still not presenting any evidence of the native resolution. It’s not clear from the interview with the photo editor in the news story that files are full-size JPEGs. How does he know that the files he is receiving are not Medium JPEGs from a 47MP camera? I’m not saying the files aren’t full-size JPEGS, but I’ve still not seen anything that confirms 24MP is the native resolution. Furthermore, I’m still…
