Leica SL3-P arrives with a 44.3 MP sensor and faster focusing

Leica has unveiled the SL3-P, a new full-frame mirrorless camera positioned between the 60 MP SL3 and the lower-resolution 24 MP SL2-S. It uses a 44.3 MP sensor, putting it in a practical middle ground for photographers who want plenty of detail without the file sizes and processing demands of the SL3. Leica is pitching it as a refined stills-focused body with improved autofocus and familiar premium build quality. However, while Leica say video remains a secondary priority (8.1K is mentioned, but it’s not technically DCI 8K), it’s still highly capable. The launch price is around £5,150/ €5,990 inc VAT, which is lower than the SL3 despite the new model’s “P” (Professional) positioning.

In market terms, it feels like a sensible move for Leica. It won’t beat Sony, Canon, Nikon or Panasonic on feature count or value alone (the SL3-P is based on the excellent Lumix S1R II), but it does sharpen the SL line’s identity. For buyers who want a refined camera with excellent image quality, strong handling and enough modern performance for professional work, the SL3-P makes a lot of sense. It’s less a mainstream challenger, naturally, and more a carefully aimed alternative for photographers who already value Leica’s approach.
