Leica launches two new SL lenses alongside the SL3-P, expanding its lens range with premium optics for everyday and close-up shooting, adding a fast standard prime and a specialist macro telephoto to the lineup.
The new Summilux-SL 50mm F1.4 ASPH. brings a bright, versatile focal length, crucially in a small package, that should appeal to portrait, street and general-purpose shooters, while the APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100mm F2.8 is aimed at close-up work with the optical correction that Leica users expect.
Taken together, the pair feels like a sensible strengthening of the system rather than a headline-grabbing reinvention. Leica is clearly filling out the core of the SL system with lenses that matter in real-world use. That’s significant because lens choice is what really separates one camera system from another.
My view is that these releases are more important than they may first appear. The camera body may get the attention, but lenses are where a system earns respect and loyalty. A high-quality small 50mm is always useful, and a serious 100mm macro gives the SL line more credibility for professional and specialist work. It’s an understated but smart move that makes the SL system more rounded and attractive.
Curiously, the Leica APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100mm F2.8 is priced at £2,110 inc VAT and available from the 1st September, while the new Summilux-SL 50mm F1.4 ASPH is £3,890 inc VAT and will be available towards the end of 2026.
