DXOMark reviews Canon EOS-1D X Mark III sensor

June 22, 2020 / Comments Off on DXOMark reviews Canon EOS-1D X Mark III sensor

Update July 2020: DXOMark, the Paris-based independant lab behind the sensor performance data used throughout the photo-industry, has updated the sensor performance score of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. The new score, which was revised due to an error in the original measurement data, has led to an improved overall DXOMark score of 91, up from 83. With the newly corrected data DXOMark are claiming the Canon EOS-1 D X Mark III sensor now has a wider dynamic range than the Sony a9 II at low ISOs which makes the camera more versatile in a wider range of lighting conditions. It also compares favourably at high ISOs which DXOMark…

Black and White Conversion using Capture One Pro

    June 22, 2020 / 1 Comment

Capture One Pro has one of the best (if not the best) B&W conversion options of any software application to date. Here we give you a mini-sampler of its capabilities. Black and white images are probably most authentic and compelling when the original image was conceived with the idea of it being in mono. Typically that means it was originally composed without strong colour influences, but that’s not necessarily so. Take the image above as an example, it was one of a series captured with the 50MP Fujifilm GFX-50R and the 45mm F2.8, equivalent to a FF 35mm, and it works well either in colour or B&W. So how do…

November 29, 2019 / Comments Off on Black Friday Deals

Black Friday and Cyber Week are exceptional this year, further proof, if any were needed, of the declining sales in high-end camera gear. It’s not just DSLRs that are being pushed, the latest mirrorless models in including the Canon EOS R and RP. The Nikon Z 7 and Z 6 are also included. Still, if you’re in the market for new gear, now is a good time to consider it. Most, if not all of the deals are live already and many have been extended to Cyber Week. Please visit regularly, as I will be updating this page as new deals are announced. Buying through the following links helps the…

    Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct: Initial Impressions

    November 24, 2019 / 1 Comment

The Nikkor Z 58mm F0.95 S Noct is one of Nikon’s showcase lenses – a sort of throwback to the early days of Nikon’s interest in optical research. It’s certainly a lens that splits opinions – I’m still not sure exactly how I feel about it – though there’s no denying it’s a beautifully made lens that’s capable of extremely high image quality in all its nuances. You can read additional opinion on this lens here. Build Like other Nikon exotics, it’s delivered in a massively oversized cardboard box, but inside it contains a large Pelican-type case, instead of the more usual soft-padded type. I didn’t weigh the case but…
