Sony announces a compact large aperture wide-angle G series zoom FE 16-25mm F2.8 G
Sony has announced a new compact, large aperture wide-angle G series zoom the Sony FE 16-25mm F2.8 G aimed at both stills photographers and video/filmmakers. The filter thread size is just 67mm and it looks like it’s an IF design (with no extending lens barrels) so it should be capable of taking a decent matte box or filter holder and a raft of filters. 67mm is just at the limit (minimum) of most matte box systems. This is the second lens to follow this short-zoom style, after the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G” announced in February 2024 and uses the same size filter thread. Will a third, say a 50-100mm…

Fujifilm announces two Tilt / Shift lenses: Fujinon GF30mm F5.6 T/S and GF110mm F5.6 T/S Macro
This week Fujifilm, became the latest manufacturer to add Tilt/Shift lenses to their medium format system. The introduction of the G30mm F5.6 T/S is good news for architectural photographers and landscape photographers in general. The GF110mm F5.6 T/S Macro is, of course, aimed at studio/tabletop photographers. As for the wider market, I can’t understand why Sigma hasn’t introduced any, or Sony for that matter, although in a discussion with a senior Sony executive some ten years ago now, I was told that “they [Sony, Japan] aren’t interested commercially… “. At the time I thought that was shortsighted but let’s hope that position changes. Nevertheless, I applaud Fujifilm for pushing ahead…

DXOMark compares Dynamic Range between Nikon Z7 II, Sony A7R IV and Canon EOS R5
DXOMark has just published the results for the Nikon Z7 II and compared them with the Canon EOS R5 and the Sony A7R IV, which are all fine cameras with excellent image quality. Most readers will be interested in the dynamic range, as it has a more meaningful effect on image quality at all ISOs than noise levels, especially low ISOs. However, as DR is reported at the measured ISO by DXOMark it can be difficult to decipher from the graphs what it is at the manufacturer settings – they are after all what you set on the camera. That said, using the measured ISO to present the sensor data…

If your cards have an asterisk before the lower of the two serial numbers on the reverse side of the card or start with TR (SF-G Tough only) then your card is unaffected. Sony FE 85mm F1.8 lens review: Excellent image quality at a reasonable price
Overview Announced in early 2017, the Sony FE 85mm F1.8 is a short-tele designed for the company’s mirrorless full-frame a9/a7 models. It will of course also serve double duty on the APS-C a6000 series, where it’s more or less a 135mm equivalent. Although not a premium G-master model like the F1.4 version announced the year before, it’s a lot smaller and lighter and still has some features that might be considered “premium.” This includes a near-silent, twin-focus drive system using a stepping motor, a focus-hold button that can be customised, weather sealing and a nine-blade circular aperture. It’s also quite nicely made, with a mainly metal exterior and a large…

Sony a9 II announced with new improved body design and enhanced connectivity features
Introduced today, the new Sony a9 II follows a familiar body design to its predecessor but includes some design cues from the Sony a7R IV, including a larger grip and improved button design, refined (larger) joystick design and a lock button for the exposure compensation dial. Other refinements include an upgraded Bionz x processor, improved IBIS up to 5.5-stops (from 5-stops), upgraded weatherproofing, a shutter mechanism tested in excess of 500k cycles (in line with Nikon and Canon pro-models) and an improvement in the burst rate to 10 fps when used mechanically, up from around 5 fps. Continuous shooting with the electronic shutter remains at 20 fps, however, the dual…
