Sony A7R V sensor review online at DXOMARK
My write-up of the sensor performance of the Sony A7R V is online at DXOMARK. The sensor is similar in performance to the 45.7 MP BSI sensors, but with a small increase in resolution (pixel count) this is an improvement all things considered. Resolution isn’t measured, for that, you would need to look at a lens review to get some idea.

DXOMark benchmarks Nikon Nikkor Z 85mm F1.8 S lens on the Nikon Z 7
DXOMark has tested the Nikon Nikkor Z F1.8 S on the Nikon Z 7. It performs very well. The results can be read here. Bear in mind the results are all based on the Nikon Z 7, with which it was tested. The camera has a lot to do with the overall performance. Sharpness is just one, perhaps the most obvious, example and it’s not widely known that it affects other aspects, such as vignetting and even lateral chromatic aberration. If it is tested on the Nikon Z 6 at any time in the future, you will see different results including a lower overall DXOMark score. People put so…

DXOMark compares Dynamic Range between Nikon Z7 II, Sony A7R IV and Canon EOS R5
DXOMark has just published the results for the Nikon Z7 II and compared them with the Canon EOS R5 and the Sony A7R IV, which are all fine cameras with excellent image quality. Most readers will be interested in the dynamic range, as it has a more meaningful effect on image quality at all ISOs than noise levels, especially low ISOs. However, as DR is reported at the measured ISO by DXOMark it can be difficult to decipher from the graphs what it is at the manufacturer settings – they are after all what you set on the camera. That said, using the measured ISO to present the sensor data…

DXOMark benchmarks Canon EOS R6 sensor
DXOMark has evaluated the sensor in the Canon EOS R6 and found it to be very close in performance to the flagship Canon EOS-1DX Mark III*. After running the camera through the labs the technicians, based in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of Paris, found the EOS R6 has an impressive maximum dynamic range of just over 14 stops at both ISO 50 and ISO 100 (they return the same result). While it’s thought not to be a dual gain sensor, the EOS R6 intriguingly shows a bump in DR after ISO 200. Remember DXO shows measured ISO, so it’s effectively at ISO 400 on the camera, where it retains an…

DXOMark reviews Canon EOS-1D X Mark III sensor
Update July 2020: DXOMark, the Paris-based independant lab behind the sensor performance data used throughout the photo-industry, has updated the sensor performance score of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. The new score, which was revised due to an error in the original measurement data, has led to an improved overall DXOMark score of 91, up from 83. With the newly corrected data DXOMark are claiming the Canon EOS-1 D X Mark III sensor now has a wider dynamic range than the Sony a9 II at low ISOs which makes the camera more versatile in a wider range of lighting conditions. It also compares favourably at high ISOs which DXOMark…

DxOMark Measures Canon RF 28-70mm F2.0L USM
DxOMark has published the results of their findings on the optical performance of the Canon RF 28-70mm F2.0 L USM, the data can be found at the DxOMark site. In addition to the performance data, as one of the editors I have written the lens review. This can be found on a different page on the DxOMark site here. It’s a high-speed zoom with a constant F2.0 aperture and it has impressive optical performance overall, but be warned it’s not cheap. The review talks only of the optical properties, there is no comment on handling, build quality, AF or other subjective areas. It’s an idea to look past the overall score –…

Initial Thoughts on the Nikkor Z 24-70mm F2.8 and Nikon Z 7 (Updated)
Firstly, I still don’t feel like I’ve had enough time to fully come to terms with the Nikon Z 7. I’ve used it often but it takes months to be accustomed to working with a new camera, even as a camera reviewer with nearly 20 years’ experience (first in print and then online). Plusses include build and viewfinder quality even for my aging eyesight. It also has enough modes to accommodate a wide range of shooting scenarios including the new Eye-detection AF option which allows you to easily switch between left and right eyes using the joystick (or sub-selector, as Nikon call it). That’s a nice feature but it…

DxOMark returns to lens testing
After a break of several months DxOMark has returned to testing lenses. The first model to have the data published is the new Z-mount Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm F1.8 S for the mirrorless Nikon Z 6 and Z 7 cameras. For the time being data is only available when mounted on the higher resolution Nikon Z 7 but as that is the highest resolution body of the two it will stress the sensor more and deliver a higher sharpness score and contribute to a higher overall score. As always though, it pays to look beyond the overall score which is useful as a means to rank the lens against others…
